What Can Physical Therapy Do For You?

You may be wondering what can physical therapy do for me.  Some common misconceptions of physical therapy is that it is only for people that have had surgery, their doctor sends them and all the service entails is doing exercises. The truth is, physical therapist offer much, much more than just an exercise plan.  Surgical rehabilitation is a small piece of the population that comes to physical therapy.  In fact, physical therapy can actually help a person avoid surgery all together or assisst them in a quick recovery by preparing the body with strength and stability.  Physical therapy can help train a person to avoid the common mistakes that lead to pain and possibly surgeries, they can provide a person with pain relief, and ultimately give the patient the tools to maintain that pain free state on their own so they aren't having to continue with therapy for an eccessive time frame.

Physical therapists are musculo-skeletal specialists, meaning they are the experts when it comes tot he mechanics of the body and how the mucles, joints and skeletal structure work with one another.  At sport and Spine it is the therapists' goal is to find the cause of the symptom and correct it, not just treat the symtpom.  Although, symptom relief is often how the therapy plan will begin so that the patient may then begin to comfortable work on correcting the cause and remaining in a healthier state.

Manual Physical Therapy at Sport and Spine

Manual Therapy is a term often used to describe skilled Physical Therapy.  Manual therapy encompasses a "hands-on" approach provide a comprehensive approach for every patient. Our physical therapists specialize in manual therapy techniques to evaluate and treat the muscles, fascia, nerves and joints. They incorporate these manual techniques to facilitate a quicker return to function while progressing the patient through rehabilitative exercise programs so the improvement lasts.  Each patient is treated as an individual and the treatment that patient receives is customized to their individual needs.

The most common conditions we treat include lower back pain, sports/running injuries, headaches, whiplash, knee, shoulder and ankle injuries. We treat acute (recently happened) and chronic (long term) injuries. Each patient will receive a thorough evaluation based on a comprehensive multi-system approach involving joint mobility, soft tissue assessment and a neurological examination. Additionally, each patient is assessed using a muscle imbalance approach based on the most current research and prescribed a specific exercise program which can be incorporated into their regular workout program. Once the assessment is complete, a plan of treatment is discussed with the patient to decrease pain, restore normal function, and what can be done by the patient to maintain after therapy has successfully been completed.

Our therapists have an excellent reputation in the Rocky Mountain region and are dedicated to the newest and latest techniques of Manual Therapy. They participate in continuing education courses, teaching and lecturing nationally and internationally and conducting their own research.
